Finding a PhD position

There are two general ways in which you can look for a PhD position.

  • Look for advertised job or PhD offers. These are usually always funded either through a work-contract or a scholarship. Open positions are advertised on the official University webpages and/or on several search-portals (see below).
  • Contact a Professor or researcher at the University personally. This way you directly contact the Professor you find is doing research aligned with your interests. Depending on the funding situation in the Professors group, he can offer you a funded position or you might have to find a scholarship to fund your PhD. There are several foundations both private and public as well as political parties that offer scholarships for doing a PhD.

Not all open PhD positions offered by universities are advertised on their own websites. In order to find and compare various PhD programs offered in Europe, one can make use of the following links:

Note: Please note that this is not a comprehensive list. Moreover, this list is meant to be used IN ADDITION to the official webpage of the research group at the university. In case links do not work anymore, please use the search feature on the main website.
